About Penzamba
Penzamba are the Penzance-based community samba band. We have four excellent mestres, Jude Kirk, Claire Simpson and now Simon Thorpe and Sally Tremithick have joined the positions of mestre. Jude and Claire work very hard, bringing us a wide range of pieces to learn. With their encouragement and patience our workshops are very enjoyable. We pride ourselves on playing an extensive repertoire of Afro-Brazilian rhythms such as samba reggae and batucada with great energy, enthusiasm and colour.Great excitement is brought to the carnivals around Cornwall. The music is very lively and contagious making the audience tap their feet and get up and dance. Our costumes are very colourful , mainly pink and purple, although every year we design a new 'look' for all the carnivals we play in, as you will see from our photo gallerys.Our workshops are in Humphry Davy School Penzance on Saturday mornings at 10.00am to start playing at 10.30am and finish at 1.30pm. The cost is £3.00 per session. We have 40 members of varying degrees of levels and skill so anyone is welcome to join us, some instruments are available to start with.The workshops encourage listening skills, and teamwork,. It gives the player a sense of acheivement, self expression, positive self esteem and is good for relaxation, above all it is FUN !
We play at many venues including carnivals in Penzance, St Just, Marazion, Hayle, Truro, Flushing, Mousehole, Penryn & Zennor.

Every year we invite an excellent tutor of traditional drumming for a weekend of tuition to add to our repertoire. The knowledge of new rhythms and songs taught by Ravin " Raz " Jayasuriya. have benefited us all greatly.
